It’s Never Too Late: A Beginner’s Yoga Journey at 60+

by Carrie Bergener

Walking into a yoga class for the first time can feel intimidating - especially if you’re managing pain, recovering from injury, or simply wondering, “Am I too old to start?”

I hear that question often. The answer is simple: you are never too old, and it is never too late.

Carolyn Doss, one of my recent students, a new yogi in her 60s, began her journey not from a place of flexibility or strength. She began from a place many people will recognize - chronic pain.

Starting from Pain, Not Practice

After an accident sustained while practicing her passion for sled dog racing and two subsequent surgeries, Carolyn was left with chronic back pain and nerve damage. Over time, she noticed her body changing and not for the better. “I wasn’t moving well, and I was getting weaker,” she shared. “I was compensating to one side, which caused more problems. I was taking medication and knew something had to change.”

Yoga wasn’t an obvious choice. In fact, it felt like a risk. Carolyn was worried about keeping up in class and being able to do the poses. And like many beginners, she had another concern: “I wondered if I might simply be too old.”

The First Class: Difficult - but Telling

Carolyn’s first class wasn’t easy. “Physically, it was difficult,” she said.
But something unexpected happened. “The next morning, I woke up without back pain. I was hooked.” That moment, small but powerful, became the turning point.

Emotionally, something shifted as well. “I started learning how to quiet my mind.”

Building Strength, Confidence, and Awareness

Progress with poses and strength didn’t happen overnight, but it didn’t take long to notice a change. “After the first session, my back pain had already improved. By about the sixth week, I felt stronger and more confident in my movements.”

Equally important was something many new to yoga people don’t expect: “I learned so much about body alignment and how to help myself.”

With guidance and thoughtful modifications, she learned to move with her body and not against it. “I’ve had to be patient with myself and accept that one side may not go as far as the other—and that’s okay.”

The Surprise Benefit: Energy

When asked what surprised her most, her answer was immediate: “The increase in energy.”

For many older adults, fatigue becomes an accepted part of life. But movement that is intentional and mindful can change that narrative.

Pushing Past the Frustration

Like most beginners, Carolyn found the early weeks weren’t without challenges. She says, “I was frustrated. I didn’t know the poses. The only one I could name was downward dog.”

She found ways to support herself, even outside the studio. “I bought a deck of yoga cards and practiced at home.” And in a moment of honest humor: “I also stayed with it because I had already paid for the sessions—I didn’t want to waste the money.”

But what kept Carolyn going ultimately wasn’t obligation. It was progress. Now, she shares this advice with others: “Stay with it past that point of frustration. That’s where the change happens.”

A Message to Others Hesitating to Begin

For those in their 60s, or any age who feel unsure about starting yoga, Carolyn’s experience and skilled instructors offer a clear message: you do not need prior experience, perfect mobility, or to keep up with others in class. You just need to begin.
